Dealing with Feelings: Compassion

We have a fine line to walk, here. On the one hand, Galatians 6:2 says that we should "carry one another's burdens," but three verses later is a reminder: "each man should carry his own load." We strive to strike the balance between helping those around us and not letting them take advantage of us. How do we find the right solution to each problem?
